Insertions gathers a series of artistic interventions unfolding in and around Papierstraße. Inspired by the poetics of resistance, the programme explores public space as a site of encounter, friction, humour, and unexpected power to act. Seven invited artists and duos work with performance, material interventions and new community alliances to stir critical and joyful momentum in the everyday life of our neighbourhood.

Late summer is arriving, and after our summer break we are restarting Talking Poetics of Resistance. We would like to invite you to join us on Tuesday, September 15th, from 18:30 to 21:30h.
Talking Poetics of Resistance happens every third Tuesday of the month, unless announced otherwise. Each time, we discuss one artwork and one theoretical position.
We read together on site, so there is no need to prepare the texts in advance. The sessions are moderated and aim to critically discuss theoretical positions in relation to our own experiences, artistic practices, and different sociocultural contexts. In relation to Poetics of Resistance, we want to ask how resistance might emerge not only through opposition, but through the relations we sustain, refuse, redirect, and create together.

On Tuesday, September 15th, we will read from two texts, which you can find here, under Session 6.
Thomas Sankara's 1987 speech "A United Front Against Debt" frames sovereign debt as a continuation of colonial domination and calls for collective refusal and solidarity. In "Debt and Study" (Chapter 4 of The Undercommons: Fugitive Planning & Black Studies), Fred Moten and Stefano Harney shift the meaning of debt away from individualised obligation, repayment, and credit towards a shared and open-ended social relation: a form of indebtedness to one another that cannot simply be calculated or settled (sorry for the US focus, which you will also hear in that chapter and examples of student debts). The edition in the folder has a short foreword by curator and author Bonaventure Soh Bejeng Ndikung; we won't read it on Tuesday and I suggest you start the text by its start. Together, these texts allow us to discuss debt as political practice and social relation, a structure that shapes political dependency, moral obligation, but also possibilities of collective resistance. What happens when debt is refused, redistributed, or understood differently? And what forms of obligation might we actually want to maintain?
We will then examine an artistic work where artists get very real about subverting financial systems and practising solidarity, with all speculative provocation that art can claim. We're following a suggestion of a participant of the reading group, and we're grateful for their initiative!

Perto de Lá <> Nahe Ferne brings 12 artists and cultural workers from Salvador (Bahia, Brazil) to Berlin (Germany). Over ten days, the participants visit art and community spaces throughout the city, stirring conversations about autonomous organization, solidarity and cultural belonging in art, architecture and society, between Salvador and Berlin.

Poetics of Resistance invites Perto de Lá <> Nahe Ferne to consider artistic resistance in different contexts. Both Salvador and Berlin live from their vibrant cultural production; at the same time, in both cities, political shifts have shrunk financial and survival possibilities for artistic practices, especially the most socially engaged, political and experimental practices. While Berlin is (a) world capital of both art and resistance, Salvador is at the margins of Brazil's cultural economy– and at the very core of artistic creation, resistance, and Afrodiasporic culture that made the biggest exponents and exports of Brazilian culture. Speaking from project space to project space, collectivity to collectivity, Perto de Lá <> Nahe Ferne will collect lessons and seed friendships in Berlin.

Workshops, talks and a final exhibition make up a week of rich encounters. Perto de Lá <> Nahe Ferne hosts two public events as part of Poetics of Resistance:

In collaboration with Habitat Unit (Institute for Architecture, TU Berlin) graduate students of architecture and urban design accompany the group and learn forms of spatial production and artistic resistance from the producers from Salvador.

On Sunday, 20. September, the members of "Perto de Lá <> Nahe Ferne" will introduce their project and programme for the week.

Then, Lanussi Pasquali, of Projeto Ativa (Salvador) and Jakob Margit Wirth (founder of several spaces and collectives in Berlin and elsewhere) will share their experiences reclaiming and building spaces in Salvador and Berlin. Leftover spaces become gaps to create that which one misses in the city. But the reclamation of spaces and possible realities is far from a utopian dream. The speakers will share experiences of negotiations with authorities, owners and neighbours and address structural and imposed precarity –as well as shared issues with motivation and agency within self-organized projects. And with these issues, why and how they continue to uphold and create spaces for artistic communities and neighbours.

The conversation will spotlight the Projeto Ativa project Ocupa Coaty (2016) and their current space, Ativa Atelier, as well as the structures of Make-up e.V. and a previous project co-created by Wirth.

While the conversation begins with Lanussi Pasquali and Jakob Margit Wirth, other members of the Perto de Lá group and the audience will be active participants in the conversation. We invite all those who want to share and hear critical thoughts about the value of self-organized spaces in the city.

On the final day of their visit in Berlin, the 12 artists of Perto de Lá <> Nahe Ferne bring cuisine and ritual gestures from Bahia to Berlin, alongside an exhibition-occupation in the event space.

Ocupa Make-up, conceived as a growing occupation of the Make-up event space, reflects the artists' experiences over ten days in Berlin and connects it to experiences in Ciudad de México, Oaxaca, Chicago, and Salvador, sites of previous Perto de Lá projects.
Works of the artists and designers meet impressions from a week of continuous notation in embroidery, paper, and sound, together with the material created in a summer school with the Institute for Architecture at TU Berlin.
